Foxy and the Sound began as the musical baby of Gracie Finnigan-Fox. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in Boston, she decided it was time to give the west coast a try (sunlight!! Glorious sunlight!) and made her way out to Los Angeles. There, armed with only her songs and unbridled enthusiasm, she started making her way, getting to know the music scene and the musicians in her new habitat. After some trial and error, she had the good fortune of meeting keyboard player Jeff Bauer, and they began to play together, just for kicks. Jeff brought in drummer Scott Jones, who brought in bass player Jason Lobell, and the rag-tag little group began performing around LA. While it began as just fun, they soon found they shared a similar passion for funky, soulful rock–the kind of classic, no-holds-barred rock you rarely hear anymore. Knowing that you must always be the change you wish to see in the world, our heroes decided that they would be the ones to make that music, and began writing and performing in earnest. Still–something was missing. Luckily, that missing piece came to them in the God-sent form of guitarist Aron Ortega. It seemed that things were starting to really come together…until Scott had to leave the band for a job in the equally sunny Texas. Saddened by the loss of their goofy bandmate, but determined to continue, the band reached out to drummer (and, coincidentally, fellow Berklee grad) Sean Rainey. The chemistry was instantaneous. And thus…Foxy and the Sound was born. So gird your loins, lads and ladies…’cause they aim to take over the world with some sweet, sassy rock n’ roll, and you better believe they won’t stop ’til they drop.

You can catch this melancholic rocker bare his soul with his band every Monday night at Silverlake Lounge starting April 8th.  Contrary to any impression the name might give, Abbot Kinney is an eastside L.A. creation with a contemporary alt-rock sound with concise, melodic hooks and soaring Thom Yorke/Matt Bellamy style vocals.  Their debut self-titled was mixed by Matty Green (TV On The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and received airplay on KEXP in Seattle.  They are currently funding their next EP and tour at http://indiegogo.com/abbotkinney

The Moth & The Flame is the brainchild of Brandon Robbins and Mark Garbett. Touring members include Andrew Tolman (Imagine Dragons) and Nate Pyfer.The Moth & The Flame’s debut album was engineered by Scott Wiley (Neon Trees) and Mixed/Mastered by Mike Roskelley (Kaskade).The Moth & The Flame is rapidly winning fans and critics to their unique sound.They captured the imagination of their hometown with an art installation of anthropomorphic giants that reached a towering 20ft in height. They also have currently released their album in physical form only (with no digital downloads) due to the importance they have placed on the Art. Since adding a second show to their sold out release The Moth & The Flame have built their following with a string of sold out shows in their hometown and have steadily begun branching out through the Western US. The Moth and The Flame were recently invited to do a showcase at MPMF 2012 Cincinnati alongside other big names Grizzly Bear, Andrew Bird, Sleigh Bells, The Walkmen, The Antlers etc. They have been featured on many blogs and publications both national and international such as In Your Speakers (Boston), USD Radio (Ca), Long Brit Mag (Spain), ADC (Argentina), and Man on the Moon (Portugal) to name a few.

flight lessons

Flight Lessons is whatever it wants to be.  A project of David Sparrow of Los Angeles based rock band Burning Jet Black, the idea was created as an outlet for songwriting and collaboration.

Being a part of a band, there always tends to be material that just doesn’t “fit,” so in that spirit, these songs are open for interpretation by whoever happens to be willing to add something new to the bare bone structures.

If it turns into a folk song, so be it.  If it turns into a balls to the wall rock tune, so be it.  The existing recorded material is all very sparse with the full intention of reinventing it in a live situation.

 

The live version of Flight Lessons was only recently born in April of 2013 with its first inception being David Sparrow accompanied by Ben Levy of local band, The Vintage Tuesday.  Although it’s not a foreign concept of joining violin and guitar, the camaraderie of Levy and Sparrow created a new vibe to the existing music.  Not exactly rock n’ roll, but not sad bastard songwriter territory either.

 

As the project is only just taking off (pun intended) there’s not much else to say, except Sparrow is excited to see where it goes.

After a successful west coast tour, they are playing always all around Los Angeles. They are also currently busy recording their second album, which is due for completion Fall of 2013.

Classical Revolution: Los Angeles presents chamber music in relaxed, accessible venues throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Called an “addictive new series” by Mark Swed of the L.A.
